The Zuckerberg vs Musk saga continues… Meta has just launched Threads, a new alternative to Twitter, following months of upheaval and issues at Twitter HQ since Elon Musk overtook the platform last year.
So what is Threads? What’s happening with Twitter? And what does Musk have to say about all this? Here’s the latest…
Let’s Pull at This Thread a Little More…
Aptly known as the ‘twitter killer’, Threads is a text based conversation app recently launched by Meta. It can be linked to Instagram so users can follow accounts they are already interested in and it works much like Twitter, where people can share their views and connect over conversation.
It is currently available to anyone aged 12 and over in 31 different languages, including English, Traditional Chinese, Russian and Spanish.
Is Threads the dream alternative to Twitter we’ve been waiting for?
Twitter in Hot Water
Threads has been cleverly timed to launch when Twitter has been… going through some stuff. Ever since Elon Musk bought out Twitter in October 2022, he has made some big changes, meaning serious losses for the social media giant.
The most recent update means that Twitter users need to pay £9.60 a month to continue seeing more than 600 tweets a day. Musk has also ‘purged’ old conversations and introduced encrypted messaging.
So, How’s It Going?
Well, within just a few hours of launching, Threads gained over 10M users on the app, with celebrities flocking to sign up, with over 70M at current count and still rising.
However, things may not be as they seem. We know that Meta has a penchant for data collection and the App Store has suggested that sensitive and personal information will be collected. Threads is also intimately connected to users’ Instagram accounts, with followers and accounts able to be automatically switched over to the new platform – making it very easy to hop over and see what all the fuss is about.
While it is currently free to download, it’s also unknown at this stage whether Threads will also start charging its users in a similar way to the verification costs on Instagram and Facebook. We’ll have to wait and see!
What Does Dear Elon Musk Have to
Say About It All?
An executive at Meta recently mentioned that Thread’s goal is to be a sanely run social media site. To which Musk responded; “Thank goodness they’re so sanely run.” 👀🔥
While we have no idea who will ultimately be crowned king of social media, Musk or Zuckerberg? Twitter or Threads? We’ll have to wait for the hugely anticipated and completely ridiculous physical fight planned between the pair. Will you be watching? Bets on for a double KO!
